Armchair World is proud to introduce a new section in Perspectives by John Lyman, Ph.D. Dr. Lyman will be writing occasional articles focused on how "human factors" research and practice has influenced various elements of our life - from warfare, the space program, industrial design, mass production, consumer products to computers and (of course) the development of the internet. About The Author

Dr. John Lyman is Professor Emeritus of Engineering in the Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences, UCLA. He was one of the original directors of the Human Factors Society (now the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society) and the founding managing editor of the Journal Human Factors. He cofounded the Biomedical Engineering Society and was the first coeditor (with Dr. F. Eugene Yates) of the Annals of Biomedical Engineering. He has numerous publications in the areas of human factors, man-machine systems and engineering management. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and a member of the Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society.
